Meet Julie
Gardener, Colyton, Devon
Objectives and Challenges
To understand what colours and styles suit her.
Having a long torso and short legs, Julie would like to know how to dress for these areas.
She feels overwhelmed and indecisive when choosing outfits, so she sticks to playing safe by wearing a basic top and jeans. She would like the stress to be taken away.
She would like help choosing a ‘wow’ dress for her daughter’s wedding.
This is the start of Julie’s personal growth story.
She came to us in 2004 as a hair client. In 2009 she had her colours analysed. We already had a knowing that warm colours would suit Julie, but with confirmation of a colour analysis, she was analysed as an Autumn (deep, warm, muted).
Julie’s wardrobe was full of cool colours, which didn’t connect with her skin tone. Here we can see the cool grey top disconnecting with her skin and eyes.
Let’s discuss what is wrong with Julie’s image -
This is a typical example of Julie’s outfits. Very easy and comfortable, but not very exciting and not showing off her true personality and style preference.
After assessing her proportions and body shape, a lot had to change. As you can see, Julie has a long top half and a short bottom half. We need to balance out the proportions, by showing her how to elongate the bottom half and shorten the top half.
Julie is accentuating the top half by wearing a long t-shirt and shortening her legs even more by wearing cropped trousers, turn-ups and covered, lace-up shoes.
She has a pear-shaped body, so she carries her weight around the thigh area. Tight, non-stretch fabric does not sit well on her body, and skinny jeans are not the most flattering.
Result -
Julie looks completely different. She is her true self being a classic, natural style preference, so we know what clothes to look for.
We have reduced the length of her top half with a shorter top. This also widens the body with a wider neckline and horizontal stripes, balancing out the bottom half.
By putting her in bootleg jeans, we also balance out the top half of the body. This style of jeans also makes her legs look much longer and slimmer.
The heels and open toes also make the legs look longer, and overall the body appearance slimmer.
Lots of little tweaks make a massive difference.
Here, we see Julie, the ‘mother of the bride,’ looking fabulous at her daughter’s wedding in 2023.
As she knew beforehand, with her rules on colour and style, Julie went on a hunt for what she wanted.
We helped Julie finalise ‘the dress’ for the very important day. Understanding what Julie wanted, she came to us with ideas, we then gave her pointers on finding the ultimate dress.
We put it all together, including the hat design and colours, accessories, nail colour and makeup.
It’s amazing how Julie has progressed with her style and confidence in the last 20 years.
